If emulsion sounds like another skincare step you’re supposed to add, here’s the simpler answer: it’s often the moisturizer.
A skincare emulsion is typically a lightweight, lotion-like formula made with water and oil phases. In everyday skincare, it often works as a lighter moisturizer rather than an extra step between serum and cream.
If it leaves your skin soft and comfortable, it may be all you need. If your skin still feels tight or dry, you may prefer something richer.
So instead of asking, “Where am I supposed to fit one more product?” the more useful question is: “Could an emulsion be my moisturizer?”
Serum vs emulsion vs moisturizer: what’s the difference?
The easiest way to understand the difference is to separate what the product does from what it feels like.
Health Canada describes a moisturizer by its function: helping make skin softer and more supple by reducing water loss or increasing water content. That job can come in more than one texture. 1

Serum is a pretty flexible beauty term. It usually means a lighter, treatment-focused step, but the word itself doesn’t guarantee one texture, a certain concentration or deeper penetration.
Moisturizer is the bigger category. Emulsion and cream are simply two ways that moisturizing step can look and feel.
Can an emulsion replace moisturizer?
Yes. If the emulsion is made to moisturize and leaves your skin feeling comfortable, it can be your moisturizer.
What it may replace is a richer face cream. You don’t automatically need both.
Think less about fitting every product category into your routine and more about the finish your skin actually likes.

If you’re using an emulsion as your moisturizer, a typical routine looks like this:
In the morning, sunscreen goes after your moisturizing step and before makeup. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher and places sunscreen as the final skincare step before makeup. 7
If you like using both an emulsion and a richer cream, the lighter emulsion will usually go first. But that doesn’t mean you need both every time.
Sometimes one moisturizing step is enough.
What does “emulsion” actually mean in skincare?
Technically, an emulsion brings together two liquid phases that wouldn’t normally stay mixed, most often water and oil, with the help of emulsifying ingredients. 2
You’ll usually come across two basic structures:
- Oil-in-water, or O/W: oil droplets are dispersed through a water phase.
- Water-in-oil, or W/O: water droplets are dispersed through an oil phase.
In beauty language, emulsion usually hints at a fluid, milky or light-lotion texture. But that’s a useful texture clue, not a standardized promise.
The word alone can’t tell you whether the product is oil-free, non-comedogenic, right for a certain skin type or lighter than every face cream. Creams, lotions and other cosmetic formulas can be emulsions too. 2 4
How do you choose between an emulsion and a richer cream?
Start with comfort, finish and what else you’re putting on your skin.
Think about the weather
A lightweight emulsion can feel especially nice in warm or humid weather. When the air turns cold, dry or heavily heated, you may want something richer.
Think about what you’re layering over it
If sunscreen, primer or complexion makeup comes next, a lighter moisturizing texture may feel easier underneath. Of course, how well products layer still depends on the formulas themselves and how much you use.
Morning and night don’t have to match
You might love an emulsion in the morning and want a richer cream at night. Or the same formula may work perfectly for you twice a day. There’s no reason your morning and evening routines have to be identical.
Let your skin make the final call
Give the product a little time to settle. If your skin feels soft, supple and comfortable, you may be done. If it still feels tight, rough or dry, you may want more richness.
Skin type can be a useful starting point, but it doesn’t have to make the decision for you. Oily or combination skin doesn’t automatically need an emulsion, and dry skin isn’t automatically ruled out from using one.

What does rice ferment add to an emulsion?
Rice ferment can be an interesting part of a formula, but it isn’t the whole story.

The ingredient list can’t tell us exact percentages either. In Canada, cosmetic ingredients are generally listed in descending order, while ingredients used at 1% or less may appear in any order after those above 1%. 5
What “emulsion” doesn’t tell you
The word can tell you something about the format, but it can’t tell you everything about how the product will behave on your skin.
- It isn’t automatically oil-free.
- It isn’t automatically non-comedogenic.
- It doesn’t guarantee a better fit for oily skin.
- It doesn’t inherently penetrate more deeply than a cream.
- It doesn’t mean a richer cream will always be unnecessary.
- And it doesn’t become a required extra step just because a routine chart puts it between serum and cream.
